Know your route; work it out in advance if you've never taken it before. You don't want to
get lost, or to look unsure or vulnerable.
Stick to busy, well-lit areas wherever possible.
Walk facing oncoming traffic, to avoid kerb-crawlers.
Walk down the middle of the pavement so no-one can step out and surprise you.
Cross the road or take another route if you are concerned; it's important to trust
your instincts.

Being sober can help you to get home safely. If you've had too much to drink, try to
sober up before you attempt the journey home.
Now's not the time to listen to your iPod; it can make you less aware of your surroundings.
Keep your mobile phone close to hand (so that you can set off your alarm quickly), but
out of sight (so that it's not an obvious target for theft).
Distribute your valuables around your person; don't give yourself a reason
to fight for your handbag.
When you get close to home, get your front door keys ready. When you reach home, you
don't want to be fumbling around on your doorstep for longer than necessary.
