Make sure you have extra cash with you, in case you have to find a different way home.
Make sure you know the schedule for your bus or train, and check for last-minute changes. Then aim to arrive punctually to avoid a long wait at the stop or station.
Have your pass or the correct change ready before you get to the stop or station, so that
you can stay alert when you get there.
While you're waiting
If the station is quiet, wait in a well-lit area in view of a CCTV camera.
Be aware of the people around you and move if you're uncomfortable.
Many stations have emergency help points that you can activate, wait near one of these if you can.
When you're on the move
If you can, sit near a member of staff (e.g. the driver or a conductor), or near an emergency alarm that you can activate if necessary.
On a train or tube, avoid empty or nearly-empty carriages.
If you feel unsafe at any time, change seats or carriages. If necessary, alert a member of staff.
Throughout your journey
Keep valuables out of sight, but have your mobile close to hand in case you need to use your alarm.
